A sense of solidity

The stone has a slow period of formation that goes far beyond human knowledge.
For example, travertine – the “youngest” among stones – has a formation time that dates back to the appearance of the homo sapiens.
This project gave me the chance to approach this precious material with respect.

After meeting the Vaselli family, which has been dealing with those massive stone blocks for over a century in Tuscany, I learned about the history of this material, and I appreciated the intrinsic “temporal” component of this material.

The EIDOS bathroom collection was conceived to express the solidity of the stone.
The large surfaces branch into thin edges, while the shade of light enhances the continuity of the material; the boundaries between lights and shadows emphasize the tridimensionality of the object's volume, defining its shape beyond the function.

Eidos means “form”, in Greek. A form that can tell the time and the essence of the stone.

「石」は人間の寿命を遥かに超え長い年月を経て形成されるものであり、その過程は、私たちの生きる時間軸では捉えることはできない。
「石」の中でも形成期間が若いとされているトラバーチンでさえ、その起原は私たちの先祖、ホモ・サピエンスが地球上に現れた頃にまで遡る。

このプロジェクトでは、石という素材について改めて考える機会を与えてくれた。
そして何世代にも渡り、トスカーナの地にて巨大な石の塊と向き合ってきたVaselli 家と出会い、石と人における長い歴史を学び、次第にこの素材に含まれる“時間性”というものに魅了されていったのです。

EIDOSバスルームコレクションは、素材の持つソリッド感を活かしたコレクション。
マッシブなボデは繊細なエッジへと繋がり、光の陰影によるコントラストが美しい層の連続性を強調する。
光と影が織りなす境界線、それは軽さと立体性を帯びながら空間に広がり、機能性を超えて存在する。

EIDOSとはギリシャ語で”形”という意味。時間、存在、そして石の本質を物語ります。
